There are great differences between the Himalayas, the Rocky Mountains and the Alps. It is yet not easy to tell them apart,

by just giving a quick glance at a picture of the ranges. Generally speaking, mountains have common features,

such as rocky summits, trees growing on hill sides, snow remaining in shady couloirs…

The Dolomites though show very specific aspects and are impossible to mistake for other massifs.

Not only they were made from coral, but their history, flora and fauna make them really unique.

Mountain lovers find the views offered by spectacular landscapes very striking. Follow us for a trek in the Cortina d’Ampezzo region.

Itinerary
Day 1 : CORTINA D'AMPEZZO
Meet your group at the hotel Villa Argentina in Pocol, situated above Cortina, at 6H00 pm. Briefing.

Evening meal and night at the hotel.

Day 2: Tre Cime di Lavaredo  350m  350m  5 hrs
From Cortina, a short van ride takes us past Lake Misurina to the start of our hike. We are at the foot of the vertical rock needles Tre Cime di Lavaredo,

summiting at almost 9900 ft, so famous for their rock climbing routes.

We begin with a gentle hike around the Tre Cime. The landscape is breathtaking. We come across many relics from World War one( trenches and military tunnels…).

A loop around the range takes us back to the start of the hike. We transfer to our hotel in Pocol by minivan.

Day 3 : Mondeval Man  920m  400m  6 hrs
After a short shuttle by minivan, we hike to the Palmieri mountain hut, located at the foot of the imposing Croda da Lago.

We can admire the Mondeval alpine pastures from the Forcella Ambrizola. For many centuries,

this alpine grazing area was known for the abundance and quality of its grass.

One day, tools and human relics dating back to the Neolithic ages were found here.

Hiking across this extraordinary landscape makes it easy to understand the reason for human presence here.

Nature seems lush, water and grass bountiful, hence providing a grazing paradise for cattle herds and horses.

After hiking to Forcella Giau, we meet our minivan at Passo Giau.
Night in Pocol

Day 4 : Sennes Mountain Hut  1000m  300m  6 hrs
Today’s hike takes us into the wildlife sanctuary of the Ampezzo Dolomites. on the way up the trail cuts across
meadows and sedimentary rocky areas until the Biella hut, on the high plateau. After a short break we reach
the Forcletta Sora Forno pass, where we can expect to see grazing ibexes. From the pass we hike down to the
Sennes hut, our halt for the night.

Day 5 : Sennes Hut – Lavarella Hut  580m  680m  5 hrs
On wakening, the marmots will already be playing in the prairies around the hut, ready to have their photographs taken.

At first, the trail runs across blooming pastures. Then we reach an old military trail, cut through the mountain side,

and continue down to the Pederu hut. A gentle climb leads to a perfect pic nic area.
After lunch we hike to the comfortable Lavarella hut, surrounded by beautiful peaks.

We may continue our hike with an easy climb to one of the surrounding summits.

We spend the night at the Lavarella hut.

Day 6 : Lavarella hut – Lagazuoi Hut  1300m  650m  7 hrs
For centuries, these alpine valleys remained remote and hard to reach, thus building a strong mountain culture
amongst inhabitants. Still today, it is not unusual to here people speak “Ladin”, a dialect born from a mix of
Latin and German. Then our route follows the Alta Via Dolomiti for a while, offering amazing alpine landscape.
We hike down to a cute mountain lake and stop for lunch. The afternoon hike takes us uphill to reach the
Lagazuoi hut, where we stay for the night.

Day 7 : Col Falzarego - Passo Giau  470m  350m  4 hrs
From the Falzarego mountain pass, we follow the Great Traverse across the Dolomites.

We hike up to the summit of the Nuvolau and stop at the eponymous hut to admire the spectacular view.

On the way down we come across many ruins from World War one.

At the foot of the Cinque Torri some trenches have been restored as a remainder of the war.

Our minivan awaits us at Passo Giau, the end of the trek.

The guide may have to adapt the route to weather conditions and/or to group physical and/or technical ability.
