아마존에 이어 지구의 두 번째 허파라고도 불리는 사라왁(Sarawak). 거대한 원시 열대림 속에서 살고 있는

독특한 동식물과 다양한 부족들이 만든 풍경이 모험을 사랑하는 여행자들의 심장을 요동치게 만든다.

말레이시아에서 가장 넓은 주로 보르네오(Borneo) 섬의 남서부에 자리한 사라왁은

자연과 현대 문명이 조화롭게 어우러져 말레이시아 사람들도 살고 싶어 하는 아름다운 곳으로 꼽힌다.

●상상 그 이상의 동굴
구눙 물루 국립공원(Gunug Mulu National Park)
장엄하고도 위대하다. 2000년 유네스코 세계 유산으로 지정된 구눙 물루 국립공원은 자연의 경이로움을 탐미할 수 있는 곳이다. 물루산(Gunung Mulu, 2,377m)과 아피산(Gunung Api, 1,750m)을 포함하고 있으며, 태고의 역사를 간직한 대자연이 펼쳐진다. 구눙 물루 국립공원의 동굴들은 상상을 초월할 만큼 거대하다. 그중에서도 사슴 동굴(Deer Cave)에는 수많은 박쥐들이 서식하는데, 오후 5~7시쯤이 되면 동굴 안에서 잠들어 있던 박쥐 떼들이 먹이를 찾아 밖으로 날아오르는 광경도 목격할 수 있다. 박쥐 떼의 힘찬 비행은 사라왁 야생동물 관찰 중 최고의 매력으로 꼽히기도 한다.

 

사슴 동굴, 전체 길이가 100km 이상에 달할 정도로 어마어마한 바람 동굴(Wind Cave)과 클리어워터 동굴(Clearwater Cave), 램 동굴(Lang’s Cave)까지 포함해 4개 동굴을 쇼 케이브(Show Caves)라고 부르는데, 모두 당일치기로 다녀올 수 있고 산책로가 잘 정비된 동굴로 꼽힌다. 아피산 정상을 오르는 피나클 트레일(Pinnacle Trail)은 왕복 약 3일이 소요되는데, 칼 모양의 석회암이 수십 개나 이어져 장관을 이룬다. 초보자라면 라강스 동굴(Lagangs Cave)을 추천한다. 나무로 빽빽이 둘러싸인 길을 따라 걷다 보면 습한 열대 기후에 어느새 온몸이 땀으로 푹 젖고, 마침내 마주한 좁은 입구를 통과하면 걸어도 걸어도 끝이 나오지 않는 깊은 세계가 펼쳐진다.

●긴코원숭이를 품은 숲
바코 국립공원(Bako National Park)
국립공원의 첫인상을 결정짓는 것은 바다와 육지의 미묘한 경계에 숲을 이루고 있는 맹그로브 나무들. 해변에 뿌리를 내린 맹그로브 나무는 물을 정화해 주고 이곳에서만 볼 수 있는 긴코원숭이(proboscis monkey)에게 집과 먹이를 제공하는 중요한 나무다. 바코 국립공원은 오랜 세월의 침식에 의해 빚어진 곶과 바다가 역동적인 풍광을 연출하는 곳으로, 1957년 사라왁 주 최초의 국립공원으로 지정된 관광 명소다. 지금은 현지인들보다 외국인 관광객이 더 많이 찾는 곳이 됐다. 공원 안으로 들어가면 뱀처럼 머리를 쳐든 기암괴석도 찾아볼 수 있다. 광대한 열대 원생림 속, 도감에서나 접했던 각양각색의 동식물의 등장이 신기하고 반갑기만 하다.

●정글을 거닐다
니아 국립공원(Niah National Park)
자연 속에서 오랜 인류의 흔적을 만날 때면 형언할 수 없는 감정이 피어오른다. 아득한 시간이 감히 실감이 나지 않아서 일까. 사라왁 주의 미리(Miri)에서 남쪽으로 약 110km 내려가면 울창한 니아 국립공원을 만나게 된다. 공원 사무소에서 출발해 늪지와 숲을 지나 3km 걸어가면 석회암이 고스란히 드러난 산기슭 아래 그레이트 동굴(Great Cave)이 나온다. 그려진 지 무려 1,000년도 더 지난 벽화가 남아있는 페인티드 동굴(Painted Cave)과 400m의 석회암을 오르는 등산로, 동식물을 관찰할 수 있는 바투 니아(Batu Niah) 거리까지, 정글 트레킹의 정석이 여기 있다.

●희귀한 생명을 만나는 시간
람비르 힐스 국립 공원(Lambir Hills National Park)
생명의 보고로 탐험을 떠나볼까? 미리(Miri) 남서쪽에 위치한 람비르 힐스는 1975년 국립공원으로 지정됐다. 미리 시내에서 자동차로 30분이면 도착할 정도로 도심과 가깝지만 다양한 동식물이 자생하는 신비로운 터전이다. 저지대에서는 양치식물, 육생 난초 등을 만날 수 있으며, 조금씩 위로 올라가다 보면 다양한 관목과 식충식물들이 모습을 드러낸다. 숲에는 157종의 조류와 멧돼지, 보르네오 긴팔원숭이와 같은 희귀한 야생 동물도 서식해 조류나 야생동물 관찰에 최적의 장소로 알려져 있다.

 

사라왁을 여행하기로 했다면 본격적인 자연 탐험에 앞서 사라왁의 주도, 쿠칭(Kuching)을 가장 먼저 방문해보길 권한다. 특히 쿠칭을 가로질러 흐르는 사라왁 강변의 쿠칭 워터 프론트(Kuching Waterfront)는 쿠칭의 대표 명소이자 중심지로, 쿠칭 시민들의 정겨운 삶의 터전을 배경으로 해질녘부터 저녁까지 시시각각으로 변하는 아름다운 풍경을 만끽하며 산책하기 좋다.

쿠칭에서 가장 가까운 곳에 위치한 안나 라이스 롱하우스(Annah Rais Longhouse)도 찾아가 볼만 하다. 이곳은 말레이시아 원주민 부족 중 하나인 비다유(Bidayuh) 족이 거주하고 있는 마을로, 대나무로 만든 건축물을 수백 년째 유지하고 있다. 비다유 족은 사라왁 주 인구의 8%를 차지하는 내륙의 다약(Land Dayaks)족으로 알려져 있으며, 수백 년 된 롱하우스에 거주하며 그들만의 독특한 문화와 삶의 양식을 유지하며 살아가고 있다.

2일 쿠칭(Kuching)

Enjoy a full-day excursion to the Bidayuh tribal village, a thriving rural community which is home to one of the few remaining traditional Bidayuh longhouses in Sarawak. The Bidayuh (or Land Dayak) are the second largest indigenous tribe in Sarawak and we spend the day learning about their culture, history, and contemporary life. With our local guide, explore the old longhouse and village, walk through the farmlands, and enjoy a traditional lunch. Return to Kuching in the evening.

This village is located near the Sarawak-Kalimantan border. Along the way stop at the colourful local market in the small town of Serian, which features a variety of jungle produce such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots, tropical fruits and more.

 

3일 쿠칭(Kuching)

In the morning, embark on a cruise down the Santubong River. Take in the mangrove scenery and keep an eye out for rare Irrawaddy dolphins. After a free afternoon, join an amphibian expert for an evening nature walk in Kubah National Park. Enjoy the beautiful sounds of the jungle at nightfall and search out a wide variety of frog species, including the newly discovered Kubah narrow-mouthed frog — one of the smallest frogs in the world.

 

4일 쿠칭/구눙물루 국립공원(Kuching/Gunung Mulu National Park)

Catch a flight and transfer to our hotel near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mulu National Park, known for its lush rainforest and impressive cave systems. Take a night walk with our local guide to search out nocturnal wildlife; watch for blinking fireflies and luminescent fungi.

Enjoy this stunning National Park and UNESCO World Heritage, home to the world-famous Mulu Caves. The caves hold many world records in terms of size, height and length including the Sarawak Chamber; thought to be the largest known natural underground chamber. As well, considered the largest known cave passage in the world, the Deer Cave is home to a phenominal 2-3 million bats. Finally, the Clearwater Cave boasts an extensive system of passages, currently known to be the longest in South-East Asia. To date approximately 100 km of the system has been explore, and much still remains a mystery.

 

5일 구능물루 국립공원(Gunung Mulu National Park)

Board a longboat and travel along the Melinau River to a Penan Village for a short visit. Continue our exploration, to the Wind Cave, noting the rock calcite formations and cool breeze of the Kings Chamber. After, climb up the steps to reach the stunning underground river in Clearwater Cave. Take a dip in the cool waters and enjoy a picnic lunch in the rainforest at Clearwater Springs. This afternoon, enjoy a walk through the rainforest to the Lang and Deer Caves. Marvel at Lang's stunning stalagmites and stalactites, and be awed by Deer Cave — the largest cave passage in the world and home to an estimated 2 to 3 million bats.

 

6일 구눙물루 국립공원/코타키나발루(Gunung Mulu National Park/Kota Kinabalu)

Enjoy the morning at leisure to explore the rainforest and opt to take a canopy walk. This afternoon, catch a flight to Kota Kinabalu and enjoy the evening at leisure.

 

7일 코타키나발루/숭가이키나바탕안(Kota Kinabalu/Sungai Kinabatangan)

Catch an early morning flight to Sandakan and visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Continue to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and enjoy a talk on the bears and the conservation efforts to protect them. After, transfer by private vehicle to our lodge and enjoy a wildlife cruise and night walk.

 

8일 캄풍 빌릿(Kampung Bilit)

Enjoy wildlife excursions on foot and by boat with local guides and naturalists into the jungle. Cruise the Kinabatangan River in search of birds and wildlife, keeping your eyes open for one of Borneo's seven primate species, including the proboscis monkey and orangutan, as well pygmy elephants. Also enjoy a hike to an oxbow lake.

 

9일 캄풍 빌릿/타빈 야생동물 보호구역(Kampung Bilit/Tabin wildlife reserve)

Drive to Tabin Wildlife Reserve and check into our rainforest lodge. Then enjoy a hike along an elephant trail to the active Lipad mud volcano which provides a mineral salt lick for wildlife. After dinner, enjoy a night safari and look out for nocturnal wildlife.

 

10일 타빈 야생동물 보호구역(Tabin wildlife reserve)

Spend the day exploring the Tabin Wildlife Reserve with local guides. Enjoy an early morning bird walk, searching out some of the 300 species of birds in the area. After breakfast, drive to the main wildlife-spotting area. Later, trek through the lush green rainforest, known for its rich diversity of plants and animal species, to the Lipad Waterfall. Relax and take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a refreshing shower under the waterfall. In the late afternoon, take a wildlife drive and if we're lucky, catch a glimpse of one of the two largest mammals of Sabah — the Borneo Pygmy Elephant and the Tembadau. Nine species of primate are present in the park, as well as three species of cats, all of which are on the protected wildlife list. This evening, take a night walk in search of sleeping birds, frogs, and insects.

 

11일 타빈 야생동물 보호구역/코타키나발루(Tabin wildlife reserve/Kota Kinabalu)

Spend the morning at leisure before catching a flight back to Kota Kinabalu. Enjoy some free time to explore.

With free time opt to watch a video about the Tabin Wildlife Reserve or make a keepsake using mud from the Lipad Mud Volcano.

산악 고원에 자리 잡은 아름답고 따뜻한 Mesilou Village로 여행. 지역 가족이 운영하는 농장에 들러 키나발루 산의 전망을 즐기고 다양한 종류의 추운 기후 야채와 과일을 구경. 그런 다음 마을 사람들을 만나 전통 점심을 먹으며 오후에는 커뮤니티와 함께 ​​맞춤형 요리법을 배우기 전에 두 개의 지역 농장을 방문. 저녁에는 전통적인 사바한 댄스 공연과 함께 호화로운 저녁 식사.

3일 Kundasang/Sungai Kinabatangan

산다칸(Sandakan)으로 이동하여 사바에서 가장 긴 키나바탕간 강(Kinabatangan River)에 있는 몰입형 정글 롯지로 계속 이동. 자리를 잡은 후 리버 크루즈를 타고 저녁 강 생활의 고요함을 경험. 저녁 식사를 즐긴 후 정글을 통과하는 가이드 야간 산책.

 

4일 숭가이 키나바탕간

아침 야생 동물 활동을 목격하기 위해 강 사파리로 하루를 시작. 아침 식사 후 전문 가이드와 함께 인근 옥스보우 호수를 방문하고 코주부원숭이, 피그미 코끼리, 마카크, 긴팔원숭이를 찾기. 저녁 식사를 위해 롯지로 돌아가기 전에 더 많은 야생 동물을 관찰할 수 있는 두 번째 기회(무엇을 보게 될지 모릅니다)를 위해 또 다른 리버 크루즈.

 

5일 숭가이 키나바탕안/세필록

아침에 출발하여 야생동물의 안식처인 세필록으로 이동. 오랑우탄 재활 센터와 인접한 태양곰 보호 센터를 방문.

 

6일 세필록/풀라우 리바란

산다칸으로 이동하여 매년 수천 마리의 바다거북이 둥지로 돌아오기 때문에 거북이 섬으로도 알려진 리바란 섬으로 보트를 타고  이동. 

섬의 거북이 부화장 가이드 투어에 참여하고 거북이 보호 프로그램에 대해 알아보자. 나중에 현지 마을을 방문하여 섬에서의 삶이 어떤지 경험하십시오. 자유 시간에 스노클링이나 카약을 선택하십시오.
