NATIVE PREDATORS  
A Nest Above the Rest  
The Northern spotted owl inhabits the Pacific coast from southern Canada to  central California. This species lives in old growth forests. To raise its young, it  nests in natural cavities within dead, standing trees called snags.  
The Northern spotted owl triggered a shift in forestry management on the  Pacific Coast. As a result of owl population declines from habitat loss, the  Northwest Forest Plan was created in 1994. This plan protects mature forests  spanning the spotted owl range, to provide suitable habitat for nesting.

CONSERVATION MATTERS  Despite new forestry practices, this species continues to decline due to on-going loss of  habitat and recent competition by the invasive Barred owl (Strix varia).  Currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, federal agencies are  considering upgrading their status to endangered.  
Northern Spotted Owl  Strix occidentalis caurina
